A garage door that has come off its track is one of the more alarming things to find in your garage. The door may be hanging crooked, one side lower than the other, with rollers sticking out of the track. It's also one of the situations where you should stop using the door immediately.

Here's what causes it and what happens next.

How to tell if your door is off track

  • The door hangs unevenly or at an angle
  • One or more rollers have popped out of the vertical or horizontal track
  • There's a visible gap between the door and the track
  • The door made a loud noise, then stopped partway
  • Cables are loose, slack, or hanging off the drums
  • A section of the door looks bent or twisted

Common causes

A vehicle bumped the door

Even a gentle nudge from a bumper while the door is moving can push rollers out of the track or bend the bottom section.

A broken or slack cable

The lift cables raise both sides of the door evenly. If one breaks or slips off its drum, one side drops and the door twists out of the track. A broken spring often causes cables to lose tension too. Our broken cable repair service replaces the cable and checks the drums and springs it works with.

Bent or misaligned tracks

Loose mounting brackets let tracks shift. Over time the gap between track and rollers grows until a roller slips out.

Worn or broken rollers

Old rollers with cracked wheels or worn bearings can jump the track, especially if the door is already slightly out of alignment.

Obstructions

Something in the track, like a tool, ice buildup, or debris, can force a roller out.

What to do right away

  1. Stop using the opener. Unplug it so no one presses the button.
  2. Don't try to force the door up or down. An off-track door can fall or twist further.
  3. Keep everyone clear of the door, especially children and pets.
  4. Don't pull the emergency release if the door is open or hanging. The opener may be the only thing holding it.
  5. Take a photo from both sides if you can do so safely. It helps the technician understand what happened.
  6. Call a technician.

How a technician fixes an off-track door

A typical repair involves:

  • Securing the door so it can't move unexpectedly
  • Releasing tension safely where needed
  • Straightening or replacing bent track sections and tightening brackets
  • Resetting rollers into the track and replacing any damaged ones
  • Re-seating or replacing cables and checking the drums
  • Rebalancing the door and adjusting the springs
  • Testing the opener and safety sensors

If a section of the door is badly bent, it may need replacing. Our guide on whether to repair or replace a garage door explains how we make that call.

How to prevent it

  • Make sure the door is fully open before driving in or out
  • Keep tracks clean and free of debris (but don't lubricate them)
  • Watch for rollers that wobble or cables that fray
  • Tighten loose track brackets
  • Book an annual inspection, ideally before winter

Our garage door repair service covers track, roller, cable, and spring repairs across Durham Region, including Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Courtice, and Bowmanville.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still use my garage door if one roller is out of the track?

No. Even one roller out of the track can cause the door to bind, twist, or fall. Stop using it and call for a repair.

Can an off-track door be repaired, or does it need replacing?

Most off-track doors can be repaired. Replacement is only needed when sections are badly bent or cracked.

Why did my garage door go crooked?

Usually because one lift cable broke or slipped off its drum, so one side of the door lowered faster than the other.

Is an off-track door an emergency?

It's a safety issue. Keep the area clear and don't operate the door. If it's stuck open and you can't secure your home, mention that when you call.
