Searching Camera Footage by Description: How Smart Search Works

How smart search lets you type a description and find matching camera snapshots in seconds, what it needs to work well, and real examples.

Here's a familiar scene: something happened overnight, maybe a package disappeared or a car door was left open, and you have eight hours of footage from five cameras to look through. Scrubbing through video on a phone takes forever.

Smart search changes that. Instead of watching hours of recordings, you describe what you're looking for and the system shows you matching moments. Here's how it works.

From recordings to searchable snapshots

A smart camera system doesn't only record video. As footage comes in, the AI:

  1. Detects objects such as people and vehicles
  2. Captures snapshots of each detection with a time stamp and camera name
  3. Tags attributes where supported, for example clothing colour, whether a person is carrying a bag, or a vehicle's type and colour
  4. Indexes it all so it can be searched

When you search, the system looks through that index instead of the raw video, so results appear in seconds.

What you can search for

Depending on the system, searches can include:

  • "Person near the side gate after 9 PM"
  • "Vehicles in the driveway yesterday"
  • "Person wearing a red jacket"
  • "People at the front door this afternoon"
  • A specific camera and time range

Some newer systems accept natural-language descriptions; others use filters like object type, colour, camera, and time. Either way, the result is a list of snapshots you can tap to jump straight to the video.

Real-world examples

  • Missing package: search "person at front door" for the delivery window and see everyone who approached.
  • Car break-in: search "person near driveway" overnight and review a handful of snapshots instead of eight hours.
  • Business incident: search a camera covering the till for "person" during a shift to find a specific transaction quickly.
  • Checking a visitor: confirm when a contractor arrived and left.

What smart search needs to work well

  • AI-capable cameras and recorder. Smart search depends on detection. See AI person detection explained.
  • Good placement. Subjects need to be clearly visible and reasonably sized in frame. See where to place security cameras.
  • Decent lighting at night, or cameras with good night vision.
  • Enough storage to keep footage for the period you might need to search. See NVR vs cloud storage.
  • Accurate time settings on the recorder so results match real times.

Limits to keep in mind

  • Attributes like clothing colour are less reliable at night or in bad weather.
  • Partly hidden people or far-away subjects may not be indexed.
  • Search finds detections; if a camera didn't have a view of the event, no search can find it.

That's why smart search works best alongside continuous recording, good camera placement, and overlapping coverage.

Exporting and sharing

Once you find the moment, most apps let you export a clip or snapshot to share with police, your insurer, or a property manager. Keep the original footage on the recorder until any incident is resolved.

Setting it up

With our security camera installation service, we choose cameras and recorders that support AI detection and smart search, configure detection on each camera, and show you how to run searches in the app before we leave. For the bigger picture, see planning a home security camera system.

Frequently asked questions

Does smart search work on older cameras?

Usually not on its own. Smart search relies on AI detection from compatible cameras or recorders. Some newer recorders can add AI features to certain existing cameras.

Can I search footage from my phone?

Yes, on systems that support it. Search results appear as snapshots you can tap to play the video.

How far back can I search?

As far back as your recordings go, which depends on storage size, number of cameras, and recording settings.

Is my footage uploaded to search it?

Not necessarily. On many systems the AI and search index run locally on the camera or NVR.
